What is Electrotherapy?
This is a treatment method mostly used by Chiropractors to relieve chronic pain conditions, to relax muscles, prevent muscle spasms, increase blood flow, rehabilitate the muscle and improve mobility. Electrotherapy is a treatment option that has minimal side effects. Instead, this treatment method uses electricity that emits its own frequency and waves to assist in painful areas such as the muscles and chronic pain conditions.
How does Electrotherapy work to assist with chronic pain conditions?
Electrotherapy directly blocks pain signals and encourages the body to release its own natural painkillers -endorphins. Endorphins are among the brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, which function to transmit electrical signals within the nervous system. Endorphins interact with the opiate receptors in the brain to reduce our perception of pain and act similarly to drugs such as morphine and codeine.
Which conditions are Electrotherapy used for?
At Centurion Chiropractor, we use Electrotherapy for treatment of the following conditions:
- Chronic Pain management
- Treatment of Neuromuscular Dysfunction
- Tissue repair
- Improving joint mobility
- Treatment of Edema (both acute and chronic)
- Treatment of Fecal and urinary incontinence

Electrotherapy or electrical stimulation can be used for a wide variety of conditions as indicated, including acute sports-related or auto accident-related injuries, repetitive stress injuries, muscle strains, ligament sprains, and even neurological conditions including stroke. Electrotherapy is a drug-free, non-invasive and non-addictive treatment option.
Is Electrotherapy safe for athletes?
Electrotherapy can also be used on athletes. Electric stimulation devices have been shown to speed up an athlete’s recovery time. These medical-grade devices are designed to contract the muscles in different ways that may promote blood flow, increase muscle tone, and flush out lactic build-up. Conditions treated by Centurion Chiropractor for athletes include conditions that caused swelling, such as a sprained ankle. And overuse injuries like tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.
